Do I Need to File Form 8621? Self-Check

Tool · Last reviewed October 20, 2026 · Legal and tax review: pending

Answer five questions. This self-check gives a general result and the reason. It does not replace a review of your facts, and nothing you select is sent anywhere. Everything runs in your browser.

1. Were you a U.S. person (U.S. citizen, green card holder or U.S. tax resident) for any part of the tax year?
2. Do you own, directly or through a partnership, trust or other foreign company, units of a foreign mutual fund, a foreign ETF or another foreign company that may be a PFIC?
3. Where are the units held?
4. During the year did any of these happen? (check all that apply)
5. On the last day of the year, what was the total value of all your PFIC units? And how do you file?

The result is general information based on the IRS Instructions for Form 8621 (12-2025). The exceptions have conditions the questions cannot capture (for example the small-holding exception waives only Part I and not when you had a gain or an excess distribution). Indirect holdings, trusts, estates, exempt organizations and foreign pension arrangements have their own rules.
